Social Action

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our local community needs us now more than ever. The Social Action Committee wants you to be aware of ways you can help right now.

Gaithersburg HELP is in serious need of food and financial donations. Please click here to find out how you can help.

Sophia House-We have been providing monthly meals for the women of Sophia House. Since we aren't able to be there in person, we will be ordering food to be delivered to the shelter for the April 7th meal. If you are willing to contribute money to hlep cover the cost of the meal, please e-mail Barbara Friedlander at barbara.friedlander@gmail.com.

Interfaith Works-Interfaith Works needs volunteers to continue providing food to its residential facilities. In addition to the most critical need for financial support, they are also seeking donations of hand soap, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray, hand sanitizer, gloves, face masks, bottled water, and non-perishable foods. For the full list of items urgently needed, please click here. To make a financial donation, click here.

Shaare Torah's Social Action Committee engages the congregation in acts of Tikkum Olam (repairing the world) in order to address economic and social needs in our local community, Israel, and the world at large.  We encourage the Shaare Torah community to participate in meaningful activities to improve our society and help the most vulnerable members of our community. Each one of us can make a difference in repairing the world.

Our events this year will include the following:

  • Operation Isaiah – a collection of food to be distributed by Gaithersburg Help to needy people in our community
  • Thanksgiving baskets and gift cards for local Jewish families in partnership with the Jewish Social Services Agency
  • First Responders Event – we bring store and home baked goods to local fire stations, police departments and emergency rooms to thank them for their service.
  • Purim Mishloach Manot- our one and only fundraising event that fuels the rest of our charitable activities and programs throughout each year. Hamantashen, anyone?
  • Good Deeds Day- a day of good deeds programs and activities for our Shaare Torah families to give back to needy local residents and charitable organizations
  • Passover baskets and gift cards for local Jewish families in partnership with the Jewish Social Service Agency
  • Sukkot in April – pairing with other local synagogues we help a local family in need with home repairs. Get your tool belts out!
  • Dinners and birthday party for Sophia House – a local women’s shelter. We serve dinner on the first Tuesday of each month. Click  here to sign up.

In addition, we have donation bins in our main lobby to collect school supplies and backpacks, toiletries and socks year round! So with all these activities and programs, the Social Action Committee needs a lot of volunteers to help us make each event a success.
